As a book lover, I frequently ask for books for my birthday and holidays. I’ve had multiple family members ask for something other than books that they can buy me – according to them, I already have too many books. This is why I developed this list. Hopefully my list will make gift buying for your favorite bookish person a little less stressful.
Bookmarks
Unless they exclusively dog ear pages, use random receipts, or read a book cover to cover in a single sitting, most readers need a bookmark. If they’re anything like me, they may try to match their bookmark to their current read. Thankfully there are tons of shops out there selling bookmarks to fit every type of reader.
Book Stamps
If your special someone is the type to collect books, or likes to loan them out but wants the copy returned, then a book stamp is a fun addition to their library. You can have it personalized to their name, letting them mark that special edition as their own. With tons of styles available, you should be able to find the right one to fit your reader’s needs.
Book Sleeves
If your reader is anything like me, they will aspire to have their book look as pristine as it did when they first bought it, even after reading it. God forbid the spine be cracked or the slightest crease in the cover – a true travesty. Book sleeves have greatly improved my quality of life. Whether it be the style where you slip the book in for protection while carting it around in your purse or backpack, or the dust jacket style that protects the cover from spills and stains, these protective sleeves make travelling with books a much safer affair.
Special Editions
As book collecting has become more mainstream, more special editions of novels have been popping up. Whether it be an anniversary edition, or a special store exclusive edition, tons of books exist in many different designs. If you know your reader loves one of these books, look for some different editions online. And before you ask, yes we know it’s excessive to own multiple editions of the same book. But trust me, we need them.
Special Edition Dust Jackets
Some readers love to collect different editions of their favorite books, and a popular thing right now is redesigned dust jackets for beloved series. Often these come with wholly redesigned artwork, and make gorgeous additions to bookshelves.
Candles
Many readers love to enhance their reading experience with a cozy ambiance – the fragrant scent of a flickering candle is often a key component. With a plethora of candle types out there, you’re likely to find the perfect match for your book lover. Wood wicks that create the sound of a crackling fire? Always a win. How about a candle designed specifically for their favorite book? Even better.
Mugs
Have you heard the saying “one can never own too many books?” Well it turns out that the same goes for mugs. Much like matching their bookmark to their current read, many people also enjoy a matching mug. Whether you pick something seasonal or something good for all year round, a reader will never be sad about adding another mug to the collection.
Coffee & Tea
Now I know that loving books does not automatically mean someone also loves coffee or tea, but there does seem to be a pretty strong correlation. I recommend trying to find them something not carried by the typical grocery store. With so many small batch roasters and cute tea shops out there, I’m sure you can find something to surprise your favorite hot drink loving reader.
Bookish Props
Now this suggestion is for those with readers active on social media. Bookstagram, Booktok, Booktube – to name a few. If your reader loves talking and sharing books online, chances are they have a collection of items to enhance their photos and videos. Fantasy lovers can never have too many gilded crowns or ornate daggers. Dark academia readers have endless need for candlesticks, quill pens, and typewriters. Take a look at what they post. There’s a good chance you’ll have the perfect idea for what can make their pictures even better.
Book Ends
If your book lover enjoys making their books part of the home decor, finding matching book ends can really help to enhance their space. Or if they simply have too many books to fit on their shelves, book ends help to store the overflow with a little more style.
Extra Warmth
For many readers, creating the perfect cozy space for reading is dependent on all things warm and fuzzy. For some that means blankets, others fuzzy socks and slippers, or perhaps even a microwavable warmie – and of course there are those that require all of the above (myself included).
Mug Warmer
I’m the type of person that loves cozying up with a hot cup of comfort while I’m doing my reading. I’m also the type to forget about my drink once I’m engrossed with the story. Having a mug warmer nearby ensures I don’t have to get up to reheat my drink once I do remember it, maximizing every moment of precious reading time.
A Copy of Your Favorite Book
If you happen to be a book lover yourself, or just have one book you hold near and dear to your heart, that may be the perfect gift. If you want to make this gift extra special though, try this: write an inscription at the beginning of the book. Say why you loved it. Tell them why you want to share it with them. Want to go a step further? Reread the book and annotate it. Underline your favorite lines, add your commentary to the margins, dog ear the pages with your favorite moments. It may be more work, but I guarantee they’ll love it.
